Immersion Program
About the X̱aad Kíl Immersion Program
The X̱aad Kíl Immersion program is done in collaboration between X̱aad Kíl Née and Simon Fraser University’s department of Lingusitics through the Indigenous Language Program (INPL). Upon successful completion of the program students will receive a certificate in Language Proficiency from SFU, gain conversational and literacy skills in X̱aad Kíl, could teach X̱aad Kíl in schools, and enhance X̱aad Kíl for cultural or Professional reasons. This program can be completed full or part-time.
The focus of year one is to offer daily immersion practice in X̱aad Kíl, practice X̱aad Kíl, create a new generation of L2 speakers, and to develop language proficiency in the novice to intermediate-low range on the American Council on the teaching of Foreign Language’s (ACTFL) Scale.
X̱aad Kíl is at a turning point in our history. We’ve been lucky to have Elders who’ve dedicated their time and efforts to language strengthening and resource creation. We are now able to use these resources (stories, recordings, etc.), in our classrooms. With few birth speakers in X̱aad Kíl, now is the time to create new fluent speakers. Our vision for a successful program is that we will support emerging X̱aad Kíl speakers in order to increase our broader language community. Our chosen method is creating an immersive space for new learners to experience the language and providing ample opportunity for them to spend time in immersion.
